SWiM Power Inserter Green Light: What It Means and What to Check

The SWiM Power Inserter keeps the single-wire setup alive, and its green light is the quickest check you have. A steady green light after a restart is good news; a light that fades out, never returns or sits on the wrong outlet is where most 775 errors begin.

What this small box does

The SWiM Power Inserter is a small black or gray box on the dish cable, with two twist-on coax connections and a plug for a regular outlet. It supplies power to a SWiM (single wire multi-switch) setup so that several receivers can share one line from the dish. If it loses power, every receiver on that SWiM can lose the dish together. That is why error 775 is the code most closely tied to this box.

The green light

DIRECTV's published guidance about the inserter's lights is limited to the green one, so that is what we cover here. Our table lists the three situations you are likely to see.

  • Steady green after a restart. The inserter has restarted and is powered normally. DIRECTV's cue at this point is to go and check the TV to see whether the error has cleared.
  • No steady green after a restart. The inserter is not restarting normally. DIRECTV points first at power: a power strip, a switch-controlled outlet or a faulty outlet.
  • Green fading out after unplugging. The unit is still powering down. DIRECTV wants the light fully faded before the power is restored.

The correct way to power-cycle it

  1. Unplug the inserter from the outlet.
  2. Wait until the green light fully fades out. DIRECTV's business Tips and Tricks guide for bars and restaurants gives 15 seconds for the same power cycle.
  3. Plug it back in and wait about 30 seconds.
  4. Check that the green light is on and steady, then check the TV.

If the light will not return

  • If the inserter is on a power strip, plug it straight into a wall outlet.
  • If it is already in a wall outlet, try another outlet nearby.
  • Avoid any outlet controlled by a wall switch, because the inserter has to stay powered on.
  • If switching outlets fixes it, the original outlet or strip may be faulty, and it is worth having it checked.

Where it lives in a real venue

The inserter is usually near where the satellite cable enters the building, behind the TV or beside the receiver. In a larger venue it can end up behind a back bar or in a storage room. Ask whoever installed your screens to show you where it is, and write the location on the inside of the manager's binder. A five-minute walk now is worth far more than a hunt on a Saturday night. If you want help thinking through power and cabling for a busy room, see our page for bars and restaurants.

Common questions

Answers to what people ask

A steady green light after the unit is plugged in and has had about 30 seconds to start. That is DIRECTV's cue to check whether the error on the TV has cleared.

DIRECTV advises plugging it directly into a wall outlet if it is on a power strip and the light does not return to steady green. It also says to avoid outlets controlled by a wall switch.

Until the green light has fully faded out. DIRECTV's support article gives no number of seconds, and its business guide uses 15 seconds for the same power cycle.
