DIRECTV Access Card Errors 744, 745, 746, 752, 761, 762, 763 and 764

A DIRECTV access card error, any code from 744 to 764, points at the receiver's card: not seated properly, expired, or the wrong card for that receiver. Match your code below and you will usually know within minutes whether it is a re-seat, a swap or a reset.

What it means

These codes point at the receiver's access card: it may be misseated or unreadable, expired, or not the card that belongs to that receiver.

Likely causes

  • The access card is not seated properly or the receiver has trouble reading it (745, 746, 761, 762)
  • An expired access card is inserted (752, 763)
  • A wrong access card is in the receiver, often after cards were swapped (764)
  • An access card issue that a reset usually clears (744)

Quick fix

  1. Open the access card door on the front panel (on some models, the slot is on the right side)
  2. Remove the card and re-insert it with the chip facing down and the logo or picture facing up
  3. Reset the receiver: unplug the power cord for 15 seconds, plug it back in, press Power and wait for the reboot
  4. For 752 or 763, refresh the receiver and insert a newer card if you have one
  5. For 764 with several receivers affected, try switching the cards between receivers

What these codes have in common

The access card is the small card that sits behind a door on the front of the receiver (on some models, in a slot on the right side). When the receiver cannot read it, or the card does not belong to that receiver, or the card has expired, you get one of a handful of codes between 744 and 764. DIRECTV treats them as one family, and our glossary entry for the access card has the basics. If the problem is one channel rather than the whole picture, see errors 721 and 722 instead.

745, 746, 761, 762The card may not be seated properly, or the receiver cannot read itRemove and re-insert the card, then reset
752An access card update did not take; an expired card may be insertedRefresh the receiver; if that fails, try a newer card
763The access card has expiredInsert the new card, then refresh
764A wrong access card is in this receiverCheck whether cards were swapped between receivers

How to re-seat the card

  1. Open the access card door on the front panel. On some models the slot is on the right side of the receiver.
  2. Remove the card and look at it for damage or dirt.
  3. Insert it with the chip facing down and the logo or picture facing up.
  4. If the error remains, reset the receiver: unplug the power cord for 15 seconds, plug it back in, press Power on the front panel and wait for it to finish rebooting.

When the card has expired (752 and 763)

Error 752 is usually cleared by refreshing the receiver. If it is not, DIRECTV says an expired access card has probably been inserted, and you should use another, newer card if you have one. Error 763 is more direct: the card has expired. If a replacement card arrived by mail, remove the old one and insert the new one. If the error continues, refresh the receiver, then reset it and refresh again.

When cards have been swapped (764)

Error 764 means the card in the receiver is not the one that belongs to it. This often happens when cards were moved around during a cleanup or an equipment change. If more than one receiver is affected, try switching the cards between them to see whether another card belongs in this receiver.

Keeping this from happening again

In a venue with many TVs, access card errors are mostly a housekeeping problem. Keep a simple log of which receiver sits behind which TV, do not move cards between receivers, and tell staff that a receiver that is repeatedly asked to restart is a candidate for a service visit. If one receiver keeps showing a card code after re-seating and a reset, we would rather replace the part than have you wait for it to fail on game day.

Common questions

Answers to what people ask

On the DIRECTV for Business support page, 761 and 762 are labeled "Insert Your Access Card." The card may not be seated properly, or the receiver may be unable to read it. Remove it and re-insert it chip down with the logo facing up, then reset the receiver if needed.

The chip should face down, with the logo or picture facing up. On some models the card slot is on the right side of the receiver rather than behind a door on the front panel.

Not as a rule. Error 764 means a wrong card is in the receiver. Cards are meant to stay with the receiver they came with, so swap them only as a diagnostic step when more than one receiver is affected.
