What it means
The receiver had trouble ordering a DIRECTV Movies or Pay Per View title. Ordering with the remote requires the receiver to be connected to the internet or a landline phone, and that connection is not working.
Likely causes
- Phone cable plugged into the Ethernet port instead of the phone port
- Loose phone or Ethernet cable at the receiver or wall
- Defective accessory such as a phone line splitter
- Wall phone jack with no dial tone
- Internet connection down or weak
- Cinema Connection Kit Ethernet cable not plugged into the HD DVR's Ethernet port
Quick fix
- Refresh the receiver
- Confirm whether the receiver orders by phone line or by internet
- Phone line: make sure the cord is in the phone port, not the Ethernet port
- Unplug and reseat the phone cord so each end snaps in securely
- Remove splitters or other accessories and connect the line directly to the jack
- Test the jack with a regular phone; no dial tone means the wall jack is the problem
- Internet: check the connection and contact your internet service provider if it is down or weak
- Cinema Connection Kit: confirm the Ethernet cable is in the HD DVR's Ethernet port and reseat it
- If the jack works and orders still fail, contact support to request a signal call back to the satellite

Call Sports Direct General Support at 480-941-3703 (casinos can use Gaming Support at 877-659-9257) in any of these cases: a refresh and the cable, jack and internet checks do not clear the code; the jack has a dial tone but orders still fail and a signal call back is needed; or an event is coming up and you need to confirm how your account orders it.

What DIRECTV error 731 means on a commercial screen
DIRECTV error 731, along with 732, 733 and 736, shows up when a receiver tried to order a DIRECTV Movies or Pay Per View title and could not finish the order. The code is about the order, not the picture. Ordering with the remote only works when the receiver can reach DIRECTV through an internet connection or a landline phone line. That means these codes usually lead back to that connection: a loose cable, a dead jack, a splitter or an internet outage.
What it looks like on a busy floor
Picture a Saturday with a ticketed event an hour out. A bartender opens the guide on the main-wall receiver, presses order, and gets a 7-series code instead of a confirmation. Nothing else on the wall has changed, which is exactly why it is confusing.
In commercial spaces the cause is often something nobody connected to the TVs. A remodel can pull a phone cord loose. A phone-system change can leave the old jack without a dial tone. IT can install a new router that the receiver was never plugged back into. A hotel lounge or a guest-room receiver can run into the same problem after network work in the building.
Fix routine, fastest to most involved
- Refresh the receiver. It clears many problems without touching any cables.
- Work out how this receiver connects. Follow the cables on the back: a phone cord to a wall jack, or an Ethernet cable to your network or a Cinema Connection Kit.
- Phone connection: check the port. The phone cord belongs in the phone port, not the Ethernet port.
- Reseat the phone cord. Unplug it from the wall jack and plug it back in so both ends click in firmly.
- Remove splitters and accessories. Run the phone line straight from the receiver to the jack.
- Test the jack. Disconnect the receiver's line and plug in an ordinary phone. No dial tone means the wall jack is the problem, which is a job for whoever manages your phone lines.
- Internet connection: check the network. If the internet is down or weak, contact your internet service provider.
- Cinema Connection Kit: check the Ethernet cable. It must be plugged into the Ethernet port on the HD DVR. Unplug it and reseat both ends.
- Escalate. If the jack has a dial tone and orders still fail, call support to arrange a signal call back to the satellite.
When the error keeps coming back
A code that clears and then returns usually means the connection is unstable rather than broken. Things to look at:
- Recent changes. New routers, network switches, phone providers or a remodel are the usual suspects. Ask IT or facilities what moved.
- Shared or repurposed lines. A jack that now serves a card terminal or another device may not behave the way the receiver needs.
- Internet quality. A connection that drops during peak hours will fail orders at the worst moment.
- Unlabeled gear. If staff cannot tell which receiver is which, they end up checking the wrong box. A simple system to label TV receivers and remotes fixes that.
If the screen shows a different code, such as a channel that will not authorize, our error code help library covers the most common ones, including errors 721 and 722.
Preparing so event night is not at risk
- Check connections days ahead. Confirm each ordering receiver has a working dial tone or a live internet link, and that its cables are seated.
- Settle the ordering method early. Know exactly how your account purchases the event and who places the order.
- Brief staff. A short routine like the one in our event-week TV planning timeline keeps a loose cable from costing you the night.
- Post the support number where the closing manager can find it.
