DIRECTV Error 928: Fixing a Wireless Video Bridge in Your Venue

DIRECTV error 928 means a Wireless Video Bridge isn't working correctly or the wireless link to the Genie receiver needs resetting. It usually follows a power loss or reboot, an unstable connection, or a replaced Genie. Wait out any restart, confirm the bridge's green power light, and use the 9876 reset only after a receiver swap.

928

What it means

The Wireless Video Bridge is not working correctly, or the wireless connection for the Genie receiver needs to be reset. TVs fed through the bridge, such as Wireless Genie Minis, lose their picture.

Likely causes

  • The Wireless Video Bridge lost power or is rebooting
  • The wireless connection is unstable
  • The Genie receiver was replaced and the bridge needs to be reconnected

Quick fix

  1. If the bridge is restarting, wait for it to finish; the error should clear on its own
  2. Check that the bridge's power light is green
  3. If it is not green, confirm the outlet has power and the cable is securely plugged in and undamaged
  4. Make sure the bridge and Genie are properly connected and have not been moved
  5. Only if the Genie receiver was recently replaced: on the Reset Wireless Connection (error 928) screen, press 9 8 7 6 on the remote, then reconnect each Genie Mini to the main Genie
  6. On each client, select Connect Now when signal quality is good or excellent; otherwise move the client closer to the Genie

What DIRECTV error 928 means

DIRECTV error 928 means a Wireless Video Bridge isn't working correctly, or the wireless connection between a Genie receiver and its wireless clients has to be reset. The bridge lets a Wireless Genie Mini show programming without a cable run back to the main Genie. When the bridge drops, every TV that depends on it drops too. DIRECTV lists three situations behind the code: the bridge lost power or is rebooting, the wireless connection is unstable, or the Genie receiver was replaced and the bridge needs to be reconnected.

What it looks like on a busy floor

Picture a Friday dinner rush. The screens wired to receivers keep playing, but the two patio TVs and the one over the host stand all switch to a Reset Wireless Connection screen at once. That grouping is the clue. When only the wirelessly connected TVs are down, the problem sits with the bridge or its link to the Genie, not the dish or your programming.

In a hotel, the same pattern might hit a breakfast area or fitness room that was set up wirelessly to avoid pulling cable. If a single screen is frozen while its neighbors look normal, start with one TV frozen or pixelated while the others work instead.

Fix routine, fastest first

  1. Wait a few minutes. If the bridge is restarting, let it finish. The error should clear on its own once it completes.
  2. Look at the bridge's power light. Green means it has power. Our Wireless Video Bridge light guide explains the other colors.
  3. If the light isn't green, check power. Confirm the outlet is live and the cable is firmly plugged in and undamaged.
  4. Confirm nothing has moved. The bridge and Genie should stay properly connected and in place. A bridge bumped behind the bar back or shifted during cleaning is worth ruling out.
  5. Only if the Genie receiver was recently replaced: on the Reset Wireless Connection (error 928) screen, press 9 8 7 6 on the remote, then reconnect each Genie Mini to the main Genie. Clients show a Connecting to Video Bridge screen; choose Connect Now when signal quality reads good or excellent. If it doesn't, the client may need to sit closer to the Genie.
  6. If none of that applies, call support rather than repeating resets during a live service.

If you are re-pairing several Minis to a Genie 2 Server, the Add Client session times out after 60 minutes. In a large property, press the button again if the work runs long.

When error 928 keeps coming back

A code that clears and then returns usually points to something in the building, not the equipment itself.

  • Power that gets cut. A bridge on a switched outlet, or on a power strip that closing staff turn off, will drop the wireless TVs every time.
  • An unstable link. Look for anything new between the Genie and the clients: a remodel wall, a cooler, metal shelving or a relocated TV.
  • Which clients drop. The Wireless Genie Mini network lights show which TVs are losing their connection, which helps narrow the cause.

If the same screens keep failing, treat it as a layout question rather than a nightly chore.

Keeping game day off the table

  • Label the bridge and its outlet so nobody unplugs it to charge a phone or run a vacuum.
  • Keep a short reset card in the office, including the rule that 9876 is only for a replaced receiver.
  • Turn on every wireless TV well before kickoff so there's time to work through the steps.
  • Ask whether your must-work screens, the ones guests chose your venue for, should be wired instead of wireless.

Common questions

Answers to what people ask

Not as a first move. DIRECTV ties the 9876 reset to one situation: the Genie receiver was recently replaced and the wireless connection has to be rebuilt. If nobody swapped a receiver, the better steps are waiting out a restart, checking the bridge's power light and confirming the outlet and cable. If those don't clear it, call support rather than reset, because a reset means reconnecting every Genie Mini on that bridge.

Error 928 involves the Wireless Video Bridge, so it affects the TVs that depend on it, usually Wireless Genie Minis. Screens connected by cable to a receiver keep working because they never pass through the bridge. When only the wireless screens go dark together, that pattern helps you skip the dish and the programming account and go straight to the bridge, its power and its link to the main Genie.

Talk to a specialist before you do. DIRECTV's guidance asks that the bridge and Genie stay properly connected and not be moved, and relocating either one can weaken or break the link to the wireless TVs. If a spot is hard to reach or keeps getting bumped, a technician can help pick a location that holds a steadier connection and fits how your staff work.

No. If the bridge is already rebooting, unplugging it again just restarts the wait, and DIRECTV specifically warns against unplugging or resetting a Genie 2 Server while its status light is flashing. Give the equipment a few minutes first. Then check the bridge's power light and connections. A full power cycle of every box during a busy service usually costs more screen time than it saves.
