First, two minutes of triage
Before you touch anything, answer four questions. They decide which branch of this guide you are on.
- Is it every TV or only some? If only some TVs are affected, the dish is working for the others, so look at those receivers and their cables. DIRECTV for Business treats "all receivers" and "some receivers" as separate troubleshooting paths for error 771.
- What does the screen say? A code tells you more than "no signal." Write it down. 771 points at the satellite signal, and 775 points at the connection through the SWiM Power Inserter.
- What is the weather doing? Heavy rain, hail or snow can interrupt the signal between the dish and the satellite.
- What changed today? A moved TV, a cleaning crew, a tripped breaker or a rearranged back bar explain more outages than equipment failures.
The steps, in order
Work from the least disruptive step to the most involved, and stop as soon as the picture returns.
- Check the weather. If it is storming, give it a few minutes before you assume a fault.
- Look at the receiver. Is it on? Is a light lit? If it is dark, check the outlet and any power strip first.
- Check the SAT-IN cable at one receiver and every connection back to the wall outlet. Tighten by hand.
- Find the SWiM Power Inserter, the small box on the dish cable. Confirm it is plugged into an outlet that stays on, not a power strip or a switch-controlled outlet.
- Power-cycle the inserter: unplug it, wait for the green light to fade out, plug it back in, wait about 30 seconds and check for a steady green light.
- Reset one receiver using the red reset button, or by unplugging it for 15 seconds. Do one first, not all of them at once, so you can see whether it helps.
- Check signal strength on that receiver (Settings, then Satellite, then View Signal Strength) once the weather is clear. DIRECTV for Business says to call for service if it is lower than 70% in clear weather.
- If you cannot restore the picture, stop and call. Do not climb onto a roof to look at the dish.
Reading the result
| What you see | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Every TV shows 771 during a storm | Weather interrupting the dish signal | Wait it out, then re-check |
| Every TV shows 771 in clear weather | Blocked view, a cable or a dish issue | Check connections, check signal strength, then call |
| Every TV shows 775 | The inserter or a connection through it | Check power and connections at the inserter |
| One or two TVs show a code, the rest are fine | A problem local to those receivers | Check those cables and reset those receivers |
| Signal strength under 70% in clear weather | Alignment, an obstruction or cabling | Call for service |
What not to do in the middle of service
- Do not reset every receiver at once. You will lose the evidence of which one mattered.
- Do not swap cables between receivers at random. If you must, note exactly what you moved.
- Do not unplug equipment you cannot identify. Ask your manager or call us first.
- Do not go on the roof. A technician has the right equipment and safety training.
Keeping the screens on when the satellite cannot
Some commercial receivers support SignalSaver, which can switch eligible channels to an internet connection while the satellite signal is down. DIRECTV lists the H26K and H44 as supporting it. Whether it fits your venue depends on your receivers and your internet, and a specialist can walk through it with you on our DIRECTV for Business page or in a free consultation.
What to tell us when you call
Have these ready, and the call will be much shorter: the code on the screen, whether it is all TVs or some, when it started, what the weather was, anything that changed that day, and the receiver models if you know them.
