What it means
The receiver may need to be activated or its service refreshed. Either it has not been activated for DIRECTV service, or it has received only part of the data it needs to decode the satellite signal.
Likely causes
- The receiver has not been activated for service (common on new, added or swapped receivers)
- The receiver received only part of the data it needs to decode the satellite signal
- An activated receiver is having trouble connecting to the satellite signal (code appears during a live or recorded show)
Quick fix
- Note which receiver shows the code and whether a live or recorded show was playing when it appeared
- If it appeared during a show, refresh the receiver
- If the error remains, restart: unplug the power cord, wait 15 seconds, plug it back in, press Power on the front panel and let it reboot
- If it appeared with no show playing, confirm the receiver is activated on the account (Manage Equipment, then Activate next to the receiver)
- If the code persists, contact support rather than repeating restarts
Still showing? If a refresh, a restart and an activation check do not clear the code, or it keeps returning on the same receiver, call Sports Direct General Support at 480-941-3703. Gaming properties can call Gaming Support at 877-659-9257.
Applies to: DIRECTV receivers not yet activated for service · Activated DIRECTV receivers that have received only partial satellite decoding data

What error 711 looks like on a busy floor
DIRECTV error 711 usually hits one screen at a time. It is 7 p.m. on a Friday, the room is full, and the TV over the end of the bar shows an error message instead of the game while every other screen is fine. Or a receiver your team just hooked up for a new patio TV shows 711 the first time anyone turns it on. In a hotel, it often shows up right after maintenance swaps a receiver in a guest room.
The code has two possible causes. Either the receiver has not been activated for service yet, or it has received only part of the data it needs to decode the satellite signal. If every TV in the building goes dark at once, you are looking at something upstream, so start with our triage guide for no signal on every TV instead.
Reading error 711: when it appears matters
| When the code shows | What it points to | First move |
|---|---|---|
| No live or recorded show was playing | Receiver may not be activated | Confirm activation for that receiver |
| During a live or recorded show | Receiver is activated, but it is having trouble with the satellite signal | Refresh, then restart |
Ask whoever saw it first what was on the screen. That one answer saves a lot of guesswork.
Fix routine, fastest to most involved
- Write down the location and timing. Note which TV, which receiver, and whether a show was playing. Labels on receivers make this take seconds.
- Refresh the receiver. If the code appeared mid-show, a refresh is the first official step. If you do not manage the account login yourself, your support team can send it.
- Restart the receiver. Unplug the power cord from the outlet, wait 15 seconds, plug it back in, then press Power on the front panel and let it reboot completely before you judge the result.
- Confirm activation. If the code appeared with no show playing, or on a new or swapped receiver, the receiver may not be activated. The provider's own steps are to sign in, open Manage Equipment under My Equipment, and select Activate next to the receiver. On a commercial account, account access often sits with an owner or with us, so a quick call is usually faster.
- Call support. If a restart and an activation check do not clear it, stop rebooting and get a technician involved.
When 711 keeps coming back
- The same receiver, again and again. Repeated 711 on one box after resets points at that receiver or its connection to the signal. A technician should look at it rather than staff repeating restarts.
- After a move, remodel or new TVs. It is easy for one receiver to be missed during activation when several change at once. Our notes on adding TVs to your business and on moving business TV service cover what to confirm.
- Several receivers, or mixed codes. If 711 appears alongside channel authorization codes like those in our error 721 and 722 page, or access card errors, the issue may be on the account rather than any single box.
A simple log of date, receiver and what was playing gives a technician a head start.
Keep it off game day
- Power on and tune every receiver the day before a big event, and again a few hours before doors open.
- Have new or replacement receivers activated well ahead of any game, never the afternoon of.
- Label each receiver with its location so your floor staff and your support team are talking about the same box.
- Schedule equipment swaps and remodel work away from your busiest nights.
