What it means
DIRECTV equipment isn't communicating with the satellite dish, usually because too many receivers or tuners are connected to one SWiM (single wire multi-switch) power inserter. DIRECTV's business support list calls it Tuner Limit Exceeded.
Likely causes
- Too many receivers or tuners connected to the SWiM power inserter
- A recent addition, such as a new screen's receiver or a DVR using more than one tuner, pushing the SWiM past its limit
Quick fix
- Do not move the receiver, unplug the SWiM power inserter or rewire anything; DIRECTV advises against fixing this error yourself
- Note which screens show 776, which still work, and anything that changed recently
- Move priority programming to a screen that is working
- Call Sports Direct support so a technician can review and rebalance how receivers are connected to the SWiM

What DIRECTV error 776 means
DIRECTV error 776 is a capacity problem, not a weather or remote problem. DIRECTV's support page says the code means your equipment isn't communicating with the satellite dish, and that this usually happens because too many receivers or tuners are connected to the SWiM (single wire multi-switch) power inserter. The business support list labels it Tuner Limit Exceeded. DIRECTV also tells customers not to move the receiver or try to fix the error themselves, and that advice matters most in a venue, where one wrong cable can take down screens that were working fine.
What it looks like on a busy floor
The usual sign is that something changed recently. A sports bar added a receiver for the new patio screens. A DVR replaced an older box behind the bar. A hotel finished a remodel and the back-room equipment got rearranged. Things looked fine at first. Then, on a busy night with every screen tuned, one or two TVs show 776 while the rest keep playing. A bartender restarts the box, and the code comes back.
It is easy to mistake this for a dish problem, but those codes look different. If every screen loses signal at once, start with the no signal on all TVs triage guide. If the message reads SWiM network not found, see error 775.
Response routine, fastest to most involved
- Write down which screens show 776. Note the receiver numbers and which screens are still working. If your receivers aren't numbered yet, labeling receivers and remotes makes this a ten-second job.
- Move the priority game. Put the main event on a screen that is working, and update your bar TV channel map so staff aren't fighting it all night.
- Stop making changes. Don't move receivers, unplug the SWiM power inserter or swap cables. Well-meant rewiring during service can knock more screens offline.
- Note what changed. List new receivers, swapped DVRs, a new vendor's work or a remodel since things last ran cleanly. This is the most useful thing you can tell a technician.
- Call support. Sports Direct General Support is 480-941-3703, and casino and gaming properties can reach Gaming Support at 877-659-9257. Share the screens affected and what changed.
- Let a technician rebalance the system. The fix is a design change: redistributing receivers so no single SWiM carries too many tuners, or adding switching capacity. Sometimes this happens on a site visit, which our installation and support services cover.
When error 776 keeps coming back
If the code returns after it was cleared, the system is probably running at its limit and any addition tips it over. Check for:
- Screens added without a design review. Each new receiver adds load, even if the TV it feeds is small or rarely used.
- DVRs replacing simpler receivers. A DVR can use more than one tuner, so a like-for-like swap at the TV can still add load at the SWiM.
- Equipment from a previous owner or another vendor. Inherited setups are often undocumented. If you bought the business, our checklist for buying a bar covers what to ask about.
- Expansion that outgrew the original layout. A dining room that became a bar, or a hotel that added lounge screens, may need its distribution redesigned, not patched.
Keeping game day off the line
The best time to deal with 776 is before the season opener. Keep a simple inventory of every receiver, the type and which SWiM it connects to. Run any new screen past your provider before it goes in, and schedule changes for a quiet weekday rather than the week of a big game. If you're unsure how many receivers your floor really needs, why venues need so many receivers explains the logic. And make sure every manager knows the support number, so a capacity problem gets one quick call, not an hour of guesswork.
If you're planning new screens or a remodel, talk with a specialist first so the system is sized for where you're headed.
